Discover Ottawa’s Hidden Renovation Gems: Virtual RenoMark™ Reno Tour 2023 Presented By GOHBA

Another exciting year is here, and it’s time to unveil some of Ottawa’s best-kept home renovation secrets, all in the name of a great cause. Welcome to the Virtual RenoMark™ Reno Tour 2023 Presented By GOHBA, an event close to our hearts supporting Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa build affordable homes that provide a solid foundation for local families. As proud contributors and active council members of the Greater Ottawa Homebuilder’s Association (GOHBA), we are delighted to be a part of this remarkable initiative since 2020. Our role? We bring you the 3D virtual tours that make the virtual component of this event come alive.

A Glimpse Behind Closed Doors

The Virtual RenoMark™ Reno Tour is an annual celebration that shines a spotlight on home renovations in Ottawa that you wouldn’t typically get to see. For one extraordinary day, eight passionate renovators open the doors to their masterpieces, inviting the public to witness the transformation firsthand. After that, these 3D virtual tours offer an enduring digital showcase, allowing you to continue exploring these remarkable renovations online long after the in-person event concludes.

Your “Passport” to a Cause

Purchase a Reno Tour “Passport” and have the ability to visit seven renovations in the Ottawa area. When you purchase your passport, you make a donation to Habitat For Humanity. You’re not just gaining access to these remarkable renovations; you’re also helping to build homes and dreams for those in need.

A Diverse Array of Renovation Styles

This year’s Virtual RenoMark™ Reno Tour promises an eclectic mix of captivating renovations, all nestled within the heart of Ottawa. From classic restorations that pay homage to the city’s heritage to ultra-modern makeovers that redefine contemporary living, there’s something to pique everyone’s interest.

In previous years, the RenoMark™ Reno Tour Presented By GOHBA was a lively, in-person affair, bringing together homeowners, builders, and enthusiasts to explore exquisite home renovations up close. However, in 2020, we introduced a groundbreaking change in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We introduced 3D virtual tours to ensure the safety and well-being of our community while continuing GOHBA’s mission to support Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa.

But here’s the exciting news: In 2023, we made a triumphant return to in-person tours and this year, seven enthusiastic participants opened their doors to over 100 eager Ottawa residents, allowing them to witness the incredible home transformations right in their own neighborhood. The in-person event was a resounding success, bringing together our community once again and raising vital funds for Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa. The virtual tours allow people who were unable to visit in person the ability to see inside unique Ottawa renovations on their computer, phone, or tablet.

All For A Good Cause: Habitat For Humanity Greater Ottawa

Not only are we helping Ottawa residents see inside their neighbours’ latest home renovations, but the event also serves a much greater purpose. By purchasing event tickets, you’re not only gaining exclusive access to these remarkable virtual tours but also making a significant contribution to Habitat For Humanity Greater Ottawa, a non-profit organization that relies on generous donations to support its vital programs.

Every ticket sold brings us one step closer to helping families in our community achieve their dreams of safe and affordable housing. Participation in this event goes beyond the reno tour – it extends a helping hand to those in need and strengthens the bonds of our community.

Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey of discovery, innovation, and philanthropy. Together, we’re making Ottawa an even better place to call home.

We believe in the power of technology to make a difference, and that’s why we’re proud to include these 3D Tours in our annual ‘Random Scans Of Kindness’ program. Each year, we donate a portion of our 3D tour capture services to non-profit organizations. This initiative not only provides non-profits with a powerful tool to showcase their spaces but also helps them in marketing their missions and fundraising efforts. If you’re part of a non-profit or have an idea for a space that could benefit from a virtual tour, we encourage you to reach out to us. It’s our way of giving back and helping those who make our community stronger. Together, we can continue to share stories, showcase spaces, and support the causes that matter most.

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa benefits the mental, social, and physical wellbeing of children in Eastern Ontario. The CHEO Foundation achieves this objective by raising, managing, and distributing funds collected throughout several fundraising initiatives during the year. The most popular of which is the annual Dream of a Lifetime Lottery which offers its winning participants more than $4.7 million in prizes including a CHEO Dream Home built by Minto Communities Ottawa alongside cars, cash, and leisure trips.

Doing Our Part

As part of our annual commitment to local charities and not-for-profit organizations, we donated a Matterport 3D Tour to support the local children’s hospital charity lottery. The 3D Virtual Tour captured 360-views of the home with all aspects of the main, upper, and lower levels in incredible detail. Our Leica BLK360 was also used to create the Matterport 3D Tour, capturing the exterior facade and yard of the property.

As in-person showings were not allowed during most of the event promotion, our 3D Virtual Tour of the CHEO Dream Home was used to show more than 100,000 ticket participants their potential prize safely online.

Our Leica BLK360 3D Laser Scanner was used for capturing the exterior of the CHEO Dream Home.

If you have always desired a dream home in Ottawa but are realizing home prices are pushing you further and further away from the city, the CHEO Lifetime Lottery could be the opportunity that you’re looking for. All you have to do is buy your lottery tickets and cross your fingers! The best part is even if you don’t win the lottery, all proceeds collected are used to fund the Children’s Hospital in Eastern Ontario. Your money goes to support the kids at CHEO!

The tickets for the lottery are $100 each. You can also buy a 3-pack for $250. The deadline for 2021’s ticket sales for the lottery is 17th December at Midnight and the draw date is January 5th, 2022. You can purchase your tickets here.

The 2021 CHEO Dream Home 3D Virtual Tour

As with every year, the CHEO Dream Home was built by Minto Communities Ottawa, this time in their Mahogany Community in Manotick. Situated on the corner of Skysail Place with a long pie-shaped lot, the home only has neighbours to the left and elegantly backs onto an East-facing park scape which allows a ton of light to flood in during the morning hours.

Serenely natural scenes surround the backyard with the house overlooking the Mahogany Pond. All of this is just around the corner from growing Manotick and a thirty-minute drive from downtown Ottawa, this truly great location for the 2021 CHEO Dream Home.

In addition to the 3D Virtual Tour of the CHEO Dream Home, we captured some photography from our favourite rooms to share.

The 2021 CHEO Dream Home was designed by Tanya Collins to promote the wellness of the body and mind. The front of the house features a wraparound porch that will provide comfort to enjoy the evening breeze or the early warmth of the sun. Built near pathways, you can go for strolls, hiking, or biking during the weekends helping you unwind and connect with nature.

The CHEO Dream Home Design

From the Matterport virtual tour, the CHEO Dream Home is about 4,600 square feet with a lot of beautifully-finished space.

The grand entrance has marble tile and large windows to let an enormous amount of evening light in. The dining room and an office are immediately right and left as you enter. Passing the stairway, the ceiling soars up nearly 24′ opening to a great room that views the large backyard and pond. A designer-inspired chef’s kitchen is complete with state-of-the-art appliances, all with clean white finishes. The principal bedroom is also located on the first floor of the house and features an ensuite bathroom with incredible tile and fixture details.

The second floor of the house has two extra bedrooms, making the bungalow perfect for family life.

The basement offers so much more than a traditional man-cave. It features an entertainment room, a glass-walled additional office, work-out studio, and workshop. It also provides additional access to the three-car garage.

By scanning the 3D Virtual Tour, we had the unique opportunity of seeing the home up-close and are happy to say it is spacious, well-lit, and comes fully furnished. It truly is a Dream Home in Ottawa.

Minto Dream Home Partners

Thanks To Our Partners

We would not have had the opportunity to perform this Random Scan Of Kindness if not for Minto Communities Ottawa trusting Point3D with the creation of the CHEO Dream Home Virtual Tour. While we didn’t work directly with the trades involved, the virtual tour would never have happened without the kindhearted work of the Minto Dream Home contributors.

We are the 3D Tour vendor of choice for the Greater Ottawa Home Builders’ Assocation. As such, we are tasked every year to digitize several of Ottawa’s best renovations for the RenoMark® Virtual Reno Tour which has gone completely digital this and last year. The RenoMark® Virtual Reno Tour gives consumers the opportunity to view professionally renovated homes across Ottawa, giving them inspiration for their own renovation ideas and connecting them with Ottawa’s best RenoMark® Renovators.

Amsted Design-Build

An underutilized walkout basement was remodeled, incorporating a covered patio, to create an ultimate entertainment space that takes advantage of beautiful waterfront sightlines and offers unrestricted exterior access while adding space for a large media room, guest bedroom, home gym, and kitchenette, mudroom, and sauna area with a NanaWall (a movable glass wall).

Amsted Design-Build

This century home was poorly insulated with an inefficient floor plan. It was stripped to the studs and rebuilt with a new floor plan to suit the family’s needs. Along with a new main floor, a 15-foot-high second-story rear addition created a “treehouse” master suite that takes advantage of the backyard tree canopy while being careful not to impact the tree’s roots.

Artium Design Build

Phone Number: 613.836.0306

This was an extensive, whole-home renovation, with significant structural alterations, multiple bathrooms, a complete kitchen redo, as well as every other room in the home. The house was gutted to the studs and major structural work allowed for the removal of a significant number of walls, creating wonderfully open spaces in what had previously been a chopped up rental property. The design also included fixtures and finishes that brought the home to life in a stunning way, reflecting the homeowners’ personal taste.

RND Construction

Website: www.rndconstruction.ca
Phone Number: 613.523.8298
Email: [email protected]

This project was initially a few changes; a new kitchen, ensuite, and kids’ bathroom and steadily expanded to a whole-home renovation. The home showcases family-friendly, durable and easy-to-clean finishes. Additional storage was added throughout the home, while the aesthetics fit the pop-art-inspired style of the homeowners. The most challenging part of this project was the unexpected water damage from improperly installed windows and vinyl siding. With a little hustle and a lot of care, all damage was removed and the home is now safe and stylish.

Urbacity Design Build

Website: www.ucdb.ca
Phone Number: 613.800.6262
Email: [email protected]

Inside and out, this home was completely made over, creating a dramatic before-and-after effect. A non-functional rear addition was replaced to allow room for an entertainer’s kitchen that integrates outdoor living into the heart of the home. An angled front entry was also added that, along with new exterior cladding, seriously ups the curb appeal of the home. Walls were removed, creating a bright and open concept main floor. Bedrooms and the main bathroom got an upgrade, as did the home’s energy-efficiency measures. Overall, it was quite the transformation.

An 1860 stone home needed a lot of work and The Conscious Builder was brought in to retrofit it for better efficiency while respecting the home’s heritage. “We thought this was a great opportunity to showcase something a little different than people might be used to seeing,” says The Conscious Builder’s Casey Grey. “A lot of the value in efficient, high-performance home renos go inside the walls, so we decided to do a walls-open tour.”

Carolyn Munro Design Build

Website: www.cmdesignbuild.com
Phone Number: 613.831.9984

It was time to update this kitchen that Carolyn Munro originally designed in the 1990s. The layout suited the homeowners’ needs at the time while raising their family. Now empty nesters, they wanted a change, but one that maintained the traditional style of their home. The layout and the look were changed, but part of the kitchen was reused. “There are other options to installing a brand-new kitchen,” she says, and this project shows how you can do that.

One of the real benefits of going online, beyond making it more comfortable for homeowners to open up their homes, is that the renovations were able to be seen (and still are) online, anytime. Whereas the in-person Reno Tour takes place over a weekend, the RenoMark® Virtual Reno Tour lives online for the whole year or more.

In a typical year, tour organizers expect about 100-200 visitors over the weekend. In the same period of time, the tours had welcomed 1000 online visitors. Since, at the time of writing this blog post, there have been over 5000 visitors to the Ottawa renovations featured in the 2021 Virtual Reno Tour. Some of the renovators are using the 3D Virtual Tours to showcase their work to homeowners.

In Support Of Habitat For Humanity

To further support the Habitat For Humanity charity fundraiser, we scanned both Habitat For Humanity Ottawa Restores at Iber Road and Belfast Road.

Habitat For Humanity Restores are home and building supply stores that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. Shopping at a Habitat ReStore is a socially conscious decision, as funds generated are used to fund local Habitat for Humanity homebuilding projects.

With the 3D Virtual Tours, the stores are able to showcase what their typical inventory is comprised of. The 3D Virtual Tours are embedded on their websites and are available on Google Maps as a Google Street View Tour. By helping give a look inside the stores, Ottawa Contractors can get a better idea of what they can find at each location before making the trip.

Every year, the RenoMark® Reno Tour gives consumers the opportunity to view professionally renovated homes across Ottawa. This year, though, things were a little different. With fewer people being comfortable leaving their homes for unessential purposes and homeowners not opening up their homes to hundreds of strangers, it wasn’t looking good for the Reno Tour.

In June at a GOHBA Renovator’s Marketing Committee council meeting the topic of postponing this year’s annual Reno Tour came up for discussion and it was decided that we would capture 3D Virtual Tours of the renovations, whether they were a whole home makeover or a simple kitchen re-fit. By doing this, only our capture team needed to visit the home to make it available to view for thousands of people online.

See some of the beautiful and creative renovations featured in The 2020 Reno Tour below:

Amsted Design-Build

Website: www.amsted.ca

This whole-home renovation features a new open-concept kitchen and sunroom, updated living room, added powder room, redesigned staircase, and a fully-finished basement.

The Amsted team, in collaboration with StyleHaus Interiors, converted what was originally a 50+ year old brick bungalow with a largely unusable second floor space into a “show stopper” Craftsman home with a clean, transitional interior.

In this renovation, there were unique features and challenges. Relocating stair location and removing the interior kitchen wall opened up the entire space to unveil a beautiful surround-scape of the Ottawa River.

The annual Reno Tour you’re used go, now online

One of the real benefits of going online, beyond making it more comfortable for homeowners to open up their homes, is that the renovations were able to be seen (and still are) online, anytime. Whereas the in-person Reno Tour takes place over a weekend, the digital Reno Tour lives online for whole year or more.

In a typical year, tour organizers expect about 450-500 visitors over the weekend. In the same period of time, the tours had welcomed 800 online visitors. Since, at the time of writing this blog post, there have been over 5000 visitors to the Ottawa renovations featured in the 2020 Reno Tour. To further support the Habitat For Humanity charity fundraiser, we scanned both Habitat For Humanity Ottawa Restores at Iber Road and Belfast Road. We did this completely free of any cost as a charitable service. As part of Random Scans Of Kindness initiative, we happily support good, local non-profit organizations doing their best to enrich the lives of others.
